PassMe2 with G6 Review

Using a PassMe2 with the G6 Flash Cart.

Ok, I was supprised to see the round metal can that this devices comes in. Neat idea, I guess. Anyway, onto the hardware.

Right now, I'm just going to go through the steps of getting it to boot into NDS mode with a PassMe2. If I feel like it later, I will go through the media conversion software for music/movies/etc.

So, during the creation of this review.. I seemed to get a "Parameter Failed" a lot. So, I headed over to g6flash.com to see if downloading updated software would fix the problem.. cause this is rediculous. So I go to the download page.. and.. Hmm. What do I need to download? Could it be any more confusing? I guess I'll start with the G6Movie Player Firmware E02 (429KB) and the G6 Flash 3 PC Full Installation V2.5 (72.9MB, yes, 73 Meg!) and see if that fixes my problems. Great, they are in .rar format. Luckily I have winrar installed.. but .rar still hasn't become the standard, and .zip would have been a whole lot easier.

Anyway, after installing the new software, I reformat the G6 again in windows making sure not to use FAT32. Next, I used the G6 U-Disk Manager to put Pepsiman's SRAM Writer (passme2buttonwait.gba) in the GBA tab, and a couple of homebrew .nds files on the NDS tab.

Next, toss it into the DS and start in GBA mode. It's easiest to just select "My Card" and go to the GBA folder and run the .gba file from there, but you can also go through the "Game" section. Either way, browse to the game code for your PassMe (in my case, AMFE) and press A. SRAM Written will appear. Next, just pop in the PassMe2 with your DS card inserted and restart the DS.

That's it. It'll boot into NDS mode. I've removed the cart and it retains the SRAM data, so it should be good to go.

NOTE: Don't even bother using the CD Rom that comes with it!! If I wouldn't have downloaded the new software, I would have rated this hardware some of the worste I had used. But, with the new software, it works as you would expect.

Proper Fixing the G6

First, if you format the card using Windows, make sure you don't choose FAT32. I screwed around with the card to the point that it would only come up as "Parameter Failed !", so I used the "MPUtility" to fix it like this:

1) Format the card with FAT(16) and choose "Quick".
2) Start the MPUtility and Click "OK" to the first screen, and "Do Now" on the second.. This takes a while.
3) Start the G6 U-Disk Manager and add your NDS homebrew games/apps. (No Trim Rom/DoFAT)

How I Fix the G6.

1) Format the card under windows (again, not selecting FAT32).
2) Run G6 U-Disk manager and add your roms, cause it's good to go. The MPUtility seems to be hit or miss if it will work, or if you will get a "Disk Full" error from the U-Disk manager.
